Pap Smear Test

Early Detection for Women’s Health

A Pap smear (or Pap test) is a simple screening procedure that checks for changes in the cells of your cervix — the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.

It can detect:

  • Early signs of cervical cancer
  • Precancerous changes in cervical cells
  • Infections and inflammation

By identifying problems early, the Pap smear can save lives and help prevent cervical cancer before it develops.

Why is a Pap Smear Important?

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, but it is also one of the most preventable.

A Pap test can:

  • Detect abnormal cells before they turn into cancer
  • Make treatment more effective when changes are found early
  • Identify infections and inflammation

How Often Should You Have a Pap Smear?
  • All women aged 18 and over who have ever been sexually active are advised to have a Pap smear every two years.
  • Most types of cervical cancer develop slowly — often over 10 years — so there is little benefit in having the test more often.
  • Your doctor may recommend more frequent testing if:
    • You’ve had significant cell changes in a previous Pap smear
    • You have symptoms such as bleeding after sex or between periods

What to Expect During the Test
  • The test is quick, safe, and usually takes only a few minutes.
  • While you are lying comfortably on an examination table, a small medical

instrument called a speculum is gently inserted into the vagina so the cervix can be seen.

  • A soft brush or spatula is used to collect a small sample of cells from the cervix.
  • The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Some women feel mild discomfort or pressure, but the Pap smear should not be painful.
