Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Early Detection & Expert Care for Your Reproductive Health

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs — including the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

It is most often caused by sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea, but can also occur due to other bacteria. PID is a serious condition because it can lead to:

  • Long-term pelvic pain
  • Infertility (difficulty becoming pregnant)
  • Higher risk of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus)

Some women have no symptoms at all, making regular sexual health checks important.

Who is at Risk?

The main risk factor for PID is infection with an STI, particularly chlamydia or gonorrhoea.

You can reduce your risk by:
  • Using condoms during sexual activity
  • Limiting the number of sexual partners
  • Having regular STI screenings
Possible Symptoms of PID
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Unusual vaginal discharge (may have an odour or change in colour)
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Pain during sex (dyspareunia)
  • Fever or feeling unwell
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant

If you notice these symptoms, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential.

Diagnosis

PID is diagnosed through:

  • A pelvic examination
  • Swabs and tests for sexually transmitted infections
  • Blood or urine tests
  • In some cases, ultrasound or laparoscopy (keyhole surgery)
Treatment

PID is treated with antibiotics — usually a combination of three medications. To ensure the infection is completely cleared, it’s important to:

  • Take the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better
  • Avoid sex until treatment is completed and follow-up testing confirms the infection is gone
  • Have your sexual partners treated at the same time to prevent reinfection
  • In severe cases, hospital admission may be needed for intravenous antibiotics
Prevention
  • Consistent condom use
  • Limiting sexual partners
  • Regular sexual health check-ups
  • Early treatment of any STI symptoms
